This just in--substacker claims that British journalists are not completely extinct, provides only circumstantial evidence of their existence, but claims to have seen them in the wild.

The UK people are the dumbest people in the entire Anglosphere. Dumber than Canadians, even.

Thank you, Ricky, for this article, esp the patchwork “quilt” of Ukraine articles. Great to have this all in one spot.

Some of the comments are bizarre, considering what else could be said on this important forum. People should watch and try to understand Jeffrey Sachs’ speech at the EU Parliament - https://youtu.be/_RNE3X41IvM

He is talking primarily about actual diplomacy, unlike what has happened with t-Rump (a dinosaur with a large ass) in which instead of “the art of the deal” has thrown all his cards on the table giving away any possible bargaining position and like an untrained asset, fully disclosing his Kompromat in advance. (Read America Kompromat by Craig Unger). While NATO was still intact, it could have been parlayed for an improved UN Security Council. But that ship has sailed https://kathleenmccroskey.substack.com/p/a-possible-path-to-peace. Henceforth, if humanity cannot get off this war habit, there must be an area of neutral countries on Russia’s borders. https://kathleenmccroskey.substack.com/p/from-whence-comes-peace

War must not be the default tool in the human toolkit, but Peace certainly requires an intelligent approach to actual diplomacy.

"A neoliberal’s idea of peace is demanding that Russia surrenders to NATO."

More evidence that we need to rid the world of these brain-dead warmongering neolibs ASAP!

Don't worry, it won't get too out of hand. Both sides want to continue to enjoy their stolen wealth, their palace parties, their Mayfair/Rublevka houses. The entire planet being turned to glass interferes with this desire (for now).

It's no coincidence that this has come at a time when European leaders, particularly in the UK, France, and Germany, are all catastrophically unpopular with their electorates. In such a time leaders turn to militarism to confuse and mislead the people. It's the only card left to play.

This is especially stark in the UK, where the Tories are facing abject extinction at the hands of Reform. Labour barely commands a quarter of the electorate. That leaves the vast majority opposed to the UK establishment in one form or another, and therefore they need an external threat to rally around and bring people back into the fold with.

Sadly REFORM is likely to wipe out Labour what remains of it and make the Conservatives look like the normal moderates.

JC Denton's avatar

Labour and the Tories are functionally the same thing. Reform will likely wipe out the Tories, not Labour, for the simple reason that the Conservatives have abused their electorate for far too long and if there's a viable alternative which is polling above them then most will jump ship. I don't think the Conservatives will ever win government again, they're finished. Inertia has been the only reason they've lasted this long at all.

The opposition needs to go somewhere. That somewhere is probably Labour. Where else? The Lib Dems? Not likely.

MR HOWARD S MARKS's avatar

No but the madness will lead to severe social and economic suffering in UK/Europe and nothing good will come of extending the conflict for Ukrainians.

Herr Starmer, supporters, the compliant media, the arms producers, et. al. on trial now for the atrocities they actively prepare against the global inhabitants.

Zero tolerance for domestic terrorism, however elected and duly installed it may be.

I guess it depends what you're debating.

Military aid is one of the most effective corrupt money laundering operations on the planet.

UK taxpayer money goes to Ukraine as 'generous' military aid, it comes back to say, Thales in Belfast, to 'create jobs' in the arms industry - with the most lucrative going to lobbyists and executives - and finds its way back to politicians as campaign donations, post-politics careers as lobbyists and board members for arms companies or, for the traditionalists, deposits in untraceable accounts in the Virgin or Cayman Islands as exposed in the Panama, Paradise and Pandora Papers.

In the meantime, production and profit at Thales increases, resulting in more money for lobbyists, politicians and cooperative media outlets, creating more demand for wars to soak up the extra weapons production and the whole snowball grows.

Yeah, a lot of foreigners die, some local pensioners and welfare recipients are starved or frozen, British health, education, infrastructure and non-lethal industry decays and trust in social institutions and society more broadly is monetised and pocketed. But hey, some powerful people get very rich.

So what is there to debate?

And who among those who matter is going to debate it?

Surely opposing any war anywhere at any time is antidemocratic, unpatriotic, woke, racist and antisemitic. A lot of money says so.

Ask everyone of the brain washed warmongering liars. What happened in the Union building in Odessa in 2014. Ask them to research the BBC's report about it. Yes the BBC even reported this horrific attack by the Ukrainian facists. One of the culprits who were never persecuted, is one of the most vile vocal anti Russian extremists in the Ukrainian parlinent (rada) today.

thats why i hate rightwingers ..especially the nationalistic kind in every country. (Including my own)

Was there ever a point in history where rightwingers led to peace and prosperity? Its always llusions of grandeur leading to dick measuring leading to stick measuring and lot of shit for sane people.

do you have any ideas on how to get those thickheaded fools to understand that enforcing the superiority of one group based on arbitrary characteristics (ie geoposition of ones birth) is counterproductive?

I was kind of hopeful that globalization would lead to erasure of borders... and thus reduction on number of people claiming their plot of land is superior.... but instead we have waves upon waves of surging nationalistic foolery in most countries... (ie trumptards, brexiters, bibilovers, Afdsters, etc...).

maybe the next war will get to prune weeds... but im sad again for the sane normal people that wish to have no part in nationalistic chest thumping rituals but get splattered by flying offal

Davy Ro's avatar

Sorry to say I couldn't disagree more about Brexiteers being labelled as right wing or nationalistic. I'll explain why that is exactly. I voted for Brexit & I'm more happy about that decision as every day goes by. My City was the 1st result in, in that vote. The faces on the main stream media & right wing government members on the TV when they realised what was about to happen was priceless. My City is a socialist voting region that had never voted Tory. So there's the right wing argument blown right out of the water. What the region is where I live is the poorest region of the UK & has been for centuries. If you knew what the right government did to my city in closing down profitable heavy industry. You'd understand the hatred we have for right wing politicians. When we see our own government giving billions to Europe & totally neglecting our own poor regions with investment at all. You can understand our frustrations. Then to watch unelected dictators getting rich from the EU gravy train is salt into the wounds. I can write another 10 paragraphs explaining how the EU or the European commission agreed a dirty deal with the then Tory government. Basically making it impossible for the heavy industry to be revived in my region. Obviously right wing policies are the last policies we agree with. It's not about being racist or nationalistic. Those are the corrupt media labels placed on poverty stricken people, who have had enough of the lies, propaganda & corruption. By the way any rational person who agrees with EU current policies. Is what is say we're extreme right wing.

you dont have to be sorry for disagreeing... its actually better to disagree than to be in an echo chamber...

please look at the video about the disagreements ..its very well made and explains alot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYoA1R38cuc&t=5s

after you have hopefully watched the video and can somewhat better understand my fellings... i can reply to your points.

first it is interesting to find your position... honestly i cannot know for certain (since i dont live in UK but only visited the hotspots few times so my perception is certainly distorted) but what i could passively absorb through the internet over the years. That information suggested a noticeable correlation classical rightwing stances and leave position. Correlation is never perfect so there are always different personal / individual situations..

when drafting this reply i could quickly find the following in my support

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0176268018301320

Article from 2019

"We find that voting Leave is associated with older age, white ethnicity, low educational attainment, infrequent use of smartphones and the internet, receiving benefits, adverse health and low life satisfaction" ... "We also show that among individuals with similar socio-economic characteristics, Labour supporters are more likely to support Remain while Conservative supporters are more likely to support Leave."

again note that they state "more likely" and not 100% this or that

This was also similar to earlier (less scientific) analyis from 2016

https://www.jrf.org.uk/public-attitudes/brexit-vote-explained-poverty-low-skills-and-lack-of-opportunities

Figure 2 is a very illustrative example of typical rightwing stances and leave position. Again it is not completely generalizable on each individual voter, but the correlation is undeniably visible.

From another study the Figs 1 and 2 again demonstrate the association of typical authritarian rightwing measures and both brexit and trumpsters

https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/politicsandpolicy/trump-and-brexit-why-its-again-not-the-economy-stupid/

another typical rightwing issue of conspiracy theories (its always someone out to get you.. elites, chemtrails, chipping...) is a promnent parallel

https://www.cam.ac.uk/research/news/brexit-and-trump-voters-more-likely-to-believe-in-conspiracy-theories-survey-study-shows

this is also always confounded by the "lazy benefits leaching immigrants are stealing my job" which is also a strong parallel (or the population replacement spinoff - the governments want to replace us)

https://comparativemigrationstudies.springeropen.com/articles/10.1186/s40878-020-00208-y

Anyway... the connecting paralel that most of the articles above (and my perception from before, and from my country) strongly suggest that the connecting line is the "left behind" factor

https://capx.co/the-real-explanation-for-brexit-and-trump

The figures 2 and 3 are especcialy illustrative since correlation coefficients 0,7 and 0,8 are surprisingly high as is the correlation of the (i guess rightwing UKIP performance with leave vote - again your personal situation is one of the reasons why the correlation coefficient is not 1.0 but 0,86 is IMO as high as you can get with living people)

From the above you cant expect me to believe that it was the socialists (leftwing) that led to the Brexit....

Obviously the situation is bad if the "left behind" regions exist in the first place. In my opinion, each government SHOUD try to improve the existence of "poverty stricken people" ...since the private investment seems to avoid those regions in the first place.

However, do you really think that typical rightwing policies of less healthcare (or should i say more privatized, deregulated and expensive), less social security (mooches), less education (it is only an unnecessary expense), no unions, minimal safety standards (why not disband OSHA, defund FAA, demolish CDC and EPA) and more personal responsibility (just pull yourself by your shoelaces - sux to be you if you cant) will make it better?

Apparently the stopping of "giving billions to europe" did not magically utilize those billions internally to make the poor regions prosper

https://ukandeu.ac.uk/five-years-on-and-brexit-still-defines-the-uk-economy-and-will-continue-to/

"Investment, the lifeblood of long-term economic growth, has also faltered. Brexit-induced uncertainty compounded an already weak investment landscape, with business investment stagnating and public infrastructure funding suffering from the loss of European Investment Bank (EIB) support. While domestic initiatives, such as the National Wealth Fund (NWF), aim to fill the gap, they have yet to match the scale or efficiency of the EIB."

Apparently ..simply shouting MAGA or ~"Make Britain great again" to paraphrase doesnt cut it for a magic solution beyond getting votes of the same crowd...

"Just three in ten Britons (30%) now say that it was right for the UK to vote to leave the EU, compared to 55% who say it was wrong for the country to vote for Brexit in 2016. This is the lowest proportion of the public saying that Britain was right to vote to leave since YouGov began asking this question in the aftermath of the referendum."

https://yougov.co.uk/politics/articles/51484-how-do-britons-feel-about-brexit-five-years-on

Plus i really feel this was a typical USA plot of divide and conquer to fuck up the imaginary opponents preemptively... in the same way USA fucked up the whole middle east and north Africa (which UK idiotically supported) to have EU deal with the refugees...again to harm the competition.

Hope your situation improves. and or that some smart people figure out how to even out the growth so that common people benefit.... but for that i think Bernie Sanders style policies are the way to go instead of UKIP libertarianism (just pull yourself by your shoelaces - sux to be you if you cant)

Please let me know of some better sources of information that i might check out to understand how you think that Trump style protectionism (the brexit in effect) might benefit your region...or the "leftbehinds" in UK in general

It is not Nations that are at war, or that will continue with it. It is the oligarchs of our rotten empire and its totalitarian world order that are at war with the people. They would rather extinction by nuclear holocaust or biosphere collapse, than give up their inequality and injustice. Time to end their reign, before they end us all!
