Broadly agree with the author on the culture wars being a malign distraction. We’ve seen the Orbánisation of so-called-first-world politics and much of the aim of this was geopolitical throughout the 2010s… fanned by a confluence of bots & trolls with algorithm profits.
But I would never attribute to competence what could be attributed to passivity or inside-the-box thinking. I doubt that politicians, as a class, had any kind of conscious goal of oppression… and if they did, I’d want sources to show they did. I don’t see why Harris would have self-sabotaged! It’s more than possible that she lived in a bubble, leaders often do…
My gut feeling is — these politicians are not holding any grand vision of keeping serfs down & democracy tethered… often they might be trying to actively assist people working in poverty. It’s a vote winner after all! But in a world where a hunt for profit is holding the reins & literally nothing else matters, oppression and a rising cost of living is the inescapable result.
In other words, it’s the economy & utterly broken economic foundations that tip us over the edge, again & again. I don’t know how much they’re steering the ship and a narrative of ‘evil’ is always far more sexy than tinkering with economic reforms (see Steve Keen, Ann Pettifor & John Maynard Keynes).
It feels more like money & guns are running the show to me: true democracy would probably limit and curtail the over-consumption of the Earth’s resources by the wealthy (which surely drives some rising prices at base level).
These people are all reluctant to rock the boat or wanting to reap the benefits of power. Trump has a fascistic bent to him that does not bode well.
In Gaza these returns of hostages & break in the genocide are beyond time no matter who brings it about. I hope the region’s ordinary people are able to step into the ring now & stop the madness. The flip side of that coin is that trauma could erupt into a death cult (e.g. for those young people thinking, all my friends are dead so should I not join them?!) & yet more deranged militarism.
Anyway, what happens in the next few weeks, there? Journalistic & aid access to Gaza & people being able to support — truly support — the victims of that war without gunmen reaping the benefits… true humanitarian access, in short, will be key to any good that follows.
The answer in so much as there is one,is to reduce our dependence on "social media" - I declare on social media! If only it WAS that easy. We are actually IN WORLD WAR 3 it's started and is in progress but this is a War accompanied by coffee. WW2 had tea vans operated by nice ladies of the WRVS. We have baristas from Poland or Italy c/o Costa or Nero et al. I think Elon Musk is the False Prophet of Revelation,the sidekick to The Antichrist who produces all the miracles that Wow the people. TikTok was the only social media company that the US government didn't have a ''back door policy" of gaining your personal details. With the threat of the ban I believe Tiktok has now agreed CIA/FBI access and more control of the algorithms to squash anything that is anti establishment view like the support for Palestine
I’m under the belief that both are likely true it was an attempt to eliminate a foreign tech rival and condemnations of the Zionist Israeli entity which in part helped to spread the demand for BDS. Let’s be clear Trump has absolutely no interest in achieving lasting peace in the region let alone in Palestine. In his warped mind this so called ceasefire was about one upping achieving something Biden/Dems couldn’t or wouldn’t do. I seriously doubt if there will ever be a phase 2/3-the Zionist terrorists have never met a ceasefire that they didn’t break. I mean not a single one!
But I thought the "ceasefire" was Bidens work a last minute attempt to scupper Trump. In his last few weeks old Biden seemed to wake up and seem to be 'in the room' and actually cognisant. Maybe Dr Jill either stopped the daily meds or gave him an extra charge of a morning from the jump lead installed in the coffin. Anyway we all know those 'ceasefires' are a grim travesty. It was definitely Biden who negotiated via Blinken to get The Yahoo to pretend. The media I saw and heard totally ascribed it to Bidens credit. So we'll see how Trump develops it.
Well you’re right while Biden’s admin along with Qatar and the Saudis primarily formulated the ceasefire plan months earlier both Biden and Trump were involved in brokering the deal across the finish line. But as you pointed out history has shown us Israel has never met a ceasefire that they respected and intended on adhering to. Knowing full well no one would hold them to account especially when they’ve got the full unconditional support of the US, their enabler financier and partner in crime.
Like Laurence Ferlinghetti said, "our government is a bird with two right wings." I saw him on the Tom Snyder Show in the 70's and he said "We have to fight fascism wherever it raises it's ugly head." Fascism isn't new to our country

His environmental and economic policies are much worse than those of his predecessor, but the latter was also a criminal who supported genocide. What choice did voters have? Quo vadis?
