They were a secular state and whilst I was working over Christmas, came back to Damascus just after - Christmas trees still lit up, bars and restaurants open ... with a full mix of people with "different backgrounds etc"... ie the Muslims respected Christmas, the Christians respected things like Ramadan - that sought of thing.
