Woke Watch is just another way to distract us from the real issues
It's time to stop playing their stupid games
You might have seen Woke Watch trending on social media.
It’s a thing by The Daily Mail where you can email one of their pretend journalists to tell them what’s been boiling your gammon piss recently. Perhaps you saw a hamster that dyed its fur blue and identifies as non-binary or you’ve heard the British army is issuing rainbow-coloured uniforms or your local shopping centre is under Sharia law and forcing women to wear burkhas. While it would be tempting (and highly amusing) to spam The Daily Mail with your fake woke stories, it would be missing the point.
Initiatives like this are not just about riling The Daily Mail’s readership (it doesn’t take much), they are also about distracting everyone else. The establishment wants us in a perpetual fight over this nonsense so we fail to address the real issue which is the corporate takeover of our political parties, our country, and, if this continues, our entire planet.
The best way to address Woke Watch on social media is like this:
My most shocking Woke Watch story is that… (and complete with something along the lines of):
3 million emergency food parcels were sent in the world’s fifth largest economy last year and 14% of Britons skipped meals because they couldn’t afford to eat, yet neither party will lift the two-child welfare cap.
millennials own just 5% of wealth, despite being the largest workforce, and are the first generation since the 1930s to earn less than their parents with over 70% unable to get a mortgage.
private renters are twice as likely to struggle with debt with 3.7 million seeing their rent increased in the past year and 1.2 million depending on credit to survive.
the pandemic created a new billionaire every 30 hours while 99% of the world’s population got poorer. The ten richest billionaires more than doubled their wealth during the pandemic while 160 million fell into poverty.
2/3 of the $42,000,000,000 in new wealth created during the pandemic went to the world’s richest 1%. The $1,100,000,000,000 stolen by America’s billionaires in 2021 could have paid for a stimulus cheque of $3,400 for every US citizen.
the world’s ten richest men are six times wealthier than the poorest 3.1 billion, and if they lost 99.999% of their wealth, they would still be richer than 99% of the people on Earth.
the pandemic set gender parity back from 99 years to 135 years with women losing a collective $800 billion in 2020, and 129 million girls are out of school worldwide.
inequality contributes to the deaths of 21,000 people a day, but a pandemic windfall tax on the ten richest billionaires would fund universal healthcare and social protection, climate adaptation and gender-based violence reduction in over 80 countries while leaving these men $8 billion better off than they were before the pandemic.
fossil fuel firms cause £209 billion of climate damage every year and 100 companies are responsible for 71% of greenhouse gas emissions, yet the US and UK are granting new licences to drill for oil and gas because these companies own the major parties.
The establishment wants us waging the culture war because it doesn’t want us addressing the structural issues that cause the above problems. Every second we spend raging over whether someone else is too woke/not woke enough is a second we waste highlighting the corruption in our society that is the source of the anger of both sides of the culture divide. It’s time we stopped letting them dictate the narrative and started setting our own.
